Welcome to Checkmate Home Inspection.

Meet Jeff.

Although I spent 36 years as a middle school math and technology teacher, I spent every summer working.   Most of my initial work was building and painting.

After a number of years I started moving inside and rehabbing bathrooms, kitchens and basements.  I first received my home inspection license in 2005 and also spent 3 years building a second and third floor on my own home, doubling its size.

After retiring from teaching, I went to work for Habitat for Humanity building houses. I was a project manager overseeing the building of an entire house and instructing the volunteers.

Aside from home inspection, I am also working as a real estate investor with my son Scot, purchasing dilapidated old homes, rehabbing them, and providing upscale, affordable living. I am actively involved in the actual construction and rehab process.

I have done a lot of work with plumbing, electrical, drywall, framing, tile work, HVAC, etc.   I have done all aspects of building a home.

My wife and I house people from around the world as they attend international church conferences, as well as aspiring musicians while on the road. I also enjoy collecting chess sets (hence the name 'Checkmate Home Inspection').

  • THAILAND - Andres Velarde, a good friend of mine, is in Thailand working with Love Thy Neighbor Asia.  He is working with his wife helping to prevent human trafficking.  He does amazing work there. He returns to the USA twice a year to work (construction and rehab) to save up and continue to support himself.  Check out the website for more information.

Secret Passion? I like to write. Mostly, I enjoy writing Children’s Stories. Most of my stories are picture books (750-1500 words). Also, I just finished a teenage Christian novel about a modern-day Prodigal Son. It was co-written with a friend of mine. Soon to be published. I also have a collection of poetry and fables.
